Last March, I signed up for the NJ Ultrafest which was on the thirds weekend of March. It sounded like a great event, and was near my parents' house so I could stay with them. I signed up for the 100 miler but wasn't sure which distance would do -plus, the weather can be very unpredictable!!!
So, in Sept., to hedge my bets I also signed up for Umstead 100 miler -this would be my 4th time in Umstead and it is one of my favorite destination events. However, I had finished that 100 successfully and really could have quit while i was ahead--but had a desire to try again a few times and maybe make the Umstead 500 mile club for a t-shirt;-) Now that would be a big achievement. If you ask me whether I want to go thru the training and mental anquish again...might say NO:-(
My training started out with a jan 8 fat ass 50K (on 6 inches of snow), followed by the 14 degree Manhattan 1/2 (where did 21 miles total for day); Run around manhattan (32 miles), Albany marathon (16 degrees with real-feel of zero); the Boston build up series and caumsett park 50K (torrential rain)--it was too much pounding on concrete as my third metatarsal on left foot, where had injured it before, weakened and i got discomfort and swelling. I did back off before Caumsett but it was held in the pouring rain and the shoes that i was wearing created bad foot pain in the last 2 loops...Frank did most of my training races with me, so if you read his blog you can see how bad caumsett weather was:0( so I rested for 2 weeks til the NJ ultras, and decided to drop down to 100K. Actually, the weather turned out to be great, if cold.
I ended up running the full 100K (well, actually 65 miles) in 13:44 w/my friend Noonie--it was inspiring and motivating to see Betsy, John M., Joe G.,and other finish the 100 miler!!! The afternoon got very cold and windy and Noonie decided to stop, and my foot was still bothering me from Caumsett so i was happy to stop at 65 miles --plus, we started at 4 a.m.!!! BUT what would this do to my Umstead performance? Did I ruin everything????
The next couple weeks i rested, running 13 miles easy of the Wurtsboro course, while Frank, Kate and neil raced it!. Strange-this was one of the first winters where I didn't do any speedwork or shorter races-I really felt that i had lost it!!! I started work coaching track and the weather was cold and miserable, but at least i was doing a few intervals:-) Horray for shorter races.
Umstead-
I flew down Thursday night with cherie and Mat, and Cherie's mom, from JFK. Raleigh was cold and rainy , and Mat and I took a shuttle to our hotel. I was very happy to be in my warm hotel room, and since i had had GUM surgery on Tues (another story -was told by dentist not to run), the hotel's frozefruit bars saved me -they tasted so good and so i had 2 of those in my room and went to bed. Last day of antibiotics, and tooth felt achy..On Friday, I slept in (the reason why i flew down on thurs) and mat and I walked over to the outdoor shopping mall next to the hotel, and had lunch at a great noodle place. We then went over to the Umstead park to get our bibs and shirts, and since Mat had never seen the course, i showed him the famous headquarters spur and the start/finish area...i also saw tammy! Then we went back to hotel and rested, and at 5:30 came over for the pasta dinner, which wasn't that great -but Admas and Roger gave us a ride to Target and the hotel, which was fun, along with Bob, a new friend doing the 100 (staying at our hotel)...I went back and organized my stuff and since Noonie had also entered both races, I was to meet her in the lobby at 5 a.m. -she was driving up from a swim meet in charlotte...
so 5 a.m. rolled around and we were ready to go -I was nervous and didn't sleep well as usual. We found a great parking spot, and went into the start/finish cabin area, and talked with friends.I briefly saw Tony, but would see his wife Ginette cheering on the headquarters spur all day!!!
I lined up with Noonie and we ran into the dark, when the race promptly started at 6 a.m. Since Noonie had never seen the park or the loop, I enjoyed 'showing' it to her--amazingly, we run pretty much the same pace, so we decided to stick together (12.5 mile loops x 4 for 50 miles)-the weather was perfect, actually, if a touch chilly. We were consistent, finishing each loop in about 2:30. On loop 4, I changed out of my trail shoes and into my Nike dual fisions (lighter and more flexible)--oh oh!! The top of my foot immediately started aching --it was tough with every step, and i thought -this is it, am going to have to drop at 50. Noonie pushed me thru, saying 'let's be productive' to 50 miles, and so that became my goal--we crossed the 50 mile finish line in 10:15 !!! 5 minutes before NJ, only 2 weeks earlier --I had been eating and drinking all day, and my jaw did not hurt!! I felt good except my aching foot..Noonie decided to stop, and get into her warm car and drive to her daughter's swim meet/hotel. As she left, she offered me a ride back to the hotel!! But I was determined to go one, because i knew i had a lot left in my body, and had trained so hard and spent so much $$ to come to this event;-)!! I changed back into my trail shoes, got my iPod, took some Advil (had taken so many drugs -ugh), and started walking --walk/ran for awhile, and slowly the foot felt better -must have been the shoes and the hills!! I listened to music, and finished the next 2 loops in 6 hours. I then decided, as I was coming up the headquarters spur (and of course was grateful to see Ginette!!! and Doug vaughan's wife), that i need a pacer. Well, God was looking down on me, as an older man stepped up and asked me if i wanted someone for 25 miles and i said YES!! and he turned out to be the perfect pacer for me. he immediately got me some food (i was nauseaus at this point from the s-caps, drugs, and junk food) and drink, and off we went, and he had an extra strong flashlight to shine on the ground, too, which i needed. My pacer's name was geoff Scott, and he had moved from Ct to Chapel hill! I found out that he had finished 19 100 milers and 13 iron tris...he was also an awesome power walker so essentially walked while i jogged -my running muscles are much stronger than my walking muscles so i would jog along as he walked..somehow we made it thru the next loop in 3 hours, walking and running. It was getting really cold, and i saw Mat come up the headquarters spur shivering, with a blanket on--I wondered if he would be able to go back out.
Earlier, Noonie and I had come upon Marge, who tore her achilles --she had to sadly stop but she was cheering on Susan Grant, who was a bot behind me...anyway, my pacer made me get warmer clothing on and get some expresso gels and food--we then rejoiced that this was our last loop (the victory loop, as they call it) --I was never sleepy, but just dead tired and feet of course hurt--i was able to run and so tried to scamper along as much as possible-my pacer said that i was keeping up the finest pace he'd seen (trying to be nice) and he regaled me with stories from his 100 milers (didn't know that runners got swept away in the hardrock river),,,slowly we were closing in on the finish. We made it to mile 95, and hooked up with catra Corbett and some others who my pacer knew --we were all ready for this to be over with, as it had ceased being fun! I just needed to put it on cruise control for a couple miles, so as not to pull anything or get injured...finally we got to mile 98 --with rolling uphills --I started to run, and i ran the last few hills, with my pacer beside me-- he head his flashlight as we went down and up the last .5 mile to the finish!! I could not believe that it was over. We cross the finish line in 22:39..I thanked him and sent him home a he needed to leave the park at the 5 a.m. gate opening --I then saw Cherie and her pacer-they had finished only 4 min ahead of me. We all went inside, where Mat was leaving for his last loop -I knew; I hoped; that he would get the job done..after changing clothes, i started to feel the fatigue and thankfully Cherie's pacer drove me back to the hotel. I was able to take a shower, a short nap, and then left for airport w/mat and his wife.
During the race, i said i would never do Umstead again...but my memory will fade, and I may very well sign up for the very last time...CTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-79613064156631029372011-01-31T10:10:00.000-08:002011-01-31T10:13:15.102-08:00Boston Buildup series/jan recap<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 98px; height: 130px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGVA3BAPkUZ3tiTYCFCxZVh_IW6W24z_QHIW5evhsH4fgxsRHvy6fYidGtksJRZsJDr59pKDqZ2A0038VZxng8Y0BtgnjE98JPLOicj2smpHp0L25HT5t-kK0qVVgF_7N4jYIHVXQ-qBYI/s400/boston+build+up.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5568414327866517794" />

So far, the story this winter has been the weather --snow, snow and more snow. This year's Boston Build up series started on January 9 with the 10K --on Friday, Jan. 7, the area got 6 inches of new snow. The NYRRC even moved the Central park Fred leBow 5 miler from sat the 8th to sun the 9th. I thought that Jim might have to postpone the 10K, but he went ahead and had it, with a record turnout of over 300 runners. I
started my Umstead ultra (training has been non-existent) build-up on Sat. Jan 8 with the 'recovery from the holidays' fat ass 50K, which was put on by the
MHRRC in Straatsburg, NY ....it took me and Frank C., along with other friends, alot of effort to navigate the snow-covered roads of the 3 mile loops course -
I finished in 5:40, which was perfect--wanted to go slowly and walked alot on the snowy areas. On the way back, a group of runners met for
a beer at the new Hyde park brewery, and since the sun came out, and I finished, it was a successful day.
On Sunday, wasn't sure how would feel, but wanted to run the 10K as a social workout. Last year, the wind chills were -3, and the custodian of the Norwalk
high school gym never showed up, leaving the runners stranded outside in brutal weather!! This year it never warmed above freezing, and a stiff wind blew,
but at least the school was open!! and it was a touch warmer. The Rowayton/Norwalk course was beautiful with all the snow, and the first mile
was exciting with so many runners slipping and sliding on the high school entrance/exit road --since the first 3 miles are downhill, I was able to maintain
a faster pace (7:40s) than the 8 minutes I had hoped for (the day after 31 slow miles). I don't remember my splits, but do remember that my quads started hurting on the last section with the climbs --I made it to the top of the hill without stopping, and felt pretty good in the last push to the finish--I ran even splits for a 7:42 pace. The nice thing about the 10K is that we know everyone --lots of Wolfpitters ran, including Anton. This is a tough course!!! I was glad i wasn't in shape to race it.

Fast forward to the 15K (planned for Jan 23) and the weekend of january 22 and 23--more snow fell on Friday, jan 21, and the forecast was for bitterly cold temps.
The NYRRC held the Manhattan 1/2 marathon as scheduled in 14 degree temps, but Jim wisely postponed the 15K with snow covered roads and 8 degree temps , with
windchill of zero...turns out that the sun came out that day but it was truly bitter cold. So, ANOTHER snowstorm (over a foot) pummeled the area
on Wed jan 26, and Ridgefield looked like a winter wonderland --but would the 15K be on as scheduled? It was touch and go, but Jim did decide to go ahead. He changed the course to and out and back along the road (eliminating the undulating dirt road but still included some snow covered roads)The day was much warmer, although it did seem cold at the start (25 degrees??) and almost every runner wore 2 or 3 layers. We started out with 2 loops around the parking lot- another exciting start!! and then out onto the rolling roads --i love this course, as like the hills, and loved the snow covered roads as it is more of a strength workout. I wanted to run this one faster than the 10K, and went out a bit fast --my breathing was horrible--could not breathe or catch my breath so was forced to slow down, and the
snow covered roads helped me relax...especially as woman after young woman flew by me:)) The last mile is tough --uphill to the finish with a
sharp climb --the course seemed to take longer and when I finished i found out that it was really 9.6 --which was good...a better workout. and everyone else had to run the same course.
Thanks to Rick F. for manning the waterstop--it was great to see him, even thou I couldn't answer his question 'how's everybody'?...and congrats to all the Wolfpitters for finishing this tough run. Afterwards, new Ridgefield resident Gail J. had a lovely brunch at her house, but parking was next to impossible with all
the snow around her roads!! Amazing....what will the 20K weather bring?CTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-67691087529379662122011-01-13T11:24:00.000-08:002011-01-13T12:37:52.698-08:00Recover from the Holidays 50K-Jan 8, 2011<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 130px; height: 101px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG5K0yrpVRIM8EWkZBHy-508I4Z9Wqjn3HkmpLf7aszgCximE1xuWkZ31UwMu32g2YZypmtDfYwlGN51uF4uE9qU26nQmJSHwqvbUXEOeHl5fjZTRV6BCdFR4RAMBTyplbJZTgUEDHZ8Kl/s400/mhrrc+50K.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561772368768590306" />
After a month-long 'break' (following the dec 11 bartram forest 100K), I finally toed the line at a 50K..Frank and I had gone to the new year's marathon but 2 feet of snow foiled the efforts of most of the runners to do the full distance..we ran the 1/2 marathon in knee-deep snow covered trails and that was enough for me --I was moving for almost 3 hours!. the following day i ran 10 easy on the roads and felt completely beat up from the snow running!! So, appropriately, it snowed again on Friday, jan 7,
and running the MHRRC 50K seemed questionable--I worried about the drive up and about the snow on the course. I needn't have worried --the drive was easy (getting out in the dark was hard)if an hour and a half; and the sun came out and the day was pretty nice for January at Norrie Point park. The race started at 9 a.m. and was 10 loops of 3.1 miles --Frank and I got to the park at 8:50, right on time -I started with all my layers on, and wore my trails shoes-the footing was pretty bad, and my legs just wouldn't move!! Despite a rest day on Friday, they just seemed dead tired, and my quads were hurting--I think it was the combo of the stiffer trail shoes and the snow...but I didn't feel like i could pick up the pace and 15.5 miles took me 2:50! (with stops)--I then changed into some lightweight shoes, and felt much better -I was able to pick up the pace in the last 3 loops (34 min each) and to finish with negative splits in 2:40 (5:42)--we then met seth and Frances at the Hyde park brewery on the way home, which was the highlight!of the trip, besides finishing and seeing running friends like Lisa G. finish her first ultra!
The next day I ran the Boston Build up 10K, and while quads sore and overall tired, actually felt good and had some pick up in my legs to run a 7:42 pace...this week my achilles is bothering me--i think from the snow --so have to take it easy this weekend --next long run with hopefully be Run around manhattan in late jan...CTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-42196523362165803072011-01-13T10:55:00.000-08:002011-01-13T11:24:00.103-08:002010 recap<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkgvqkeleXhw0jI2NWctONaekEfJdjUQX7atBA1iLsMGYGxZfSWangdWRCilTbjZhC7HmefCA-Pe0CSpG55Qu6mlDxPzeiYJmAdMsePFseQY9G_vtATM4naNZ1aF299b5_KjIJfmsvpb2d/s400/108_4884.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561753439530914786" />
wow-seems so long ago (July 2010) that I updated my blog...2010 was definately a year that was crammed with races, and had its highs and lows in terms of performance--
the winter was smooth sailing but somewhere in the spring every ultra became harder and i went into over-training mode which stayed with me til August --then felt awesome after Beast of Burden (pacing Frank and running 75 miles) and cranked up the racing and long runs again but somewhere in mid Oct reached that stale stage again, and got sick and the rest of the year was tough--nycm and JFK 50, 2 races which should have been good, were lousy --but I still had fun...and i capped off the year with the bartram forest 100K--the weekend away was an early holiday present to myself, as barely traveled in the summer!! I also ran some high mileage weeks -many weeks close to 100, and averaged 50 miles a week-maybe 55.
My total miles for the year were 2848 --walking would put the total over 3000!!!
Over the course of 2010, I did
2 100 milers (Umstead and VT)
3 50 milers and over (Joe K. 12 hour (59 miles)jfk and bartram Forest)
4 marathons (albany, nycm,boston & nipmuck trail)
9 50Ks/6 hours (watchung, run around manhattan, FL 6 hour run, Camsett park, Sybil Ludington, Greenbelt, LI 6 hour, Trail mixup 6 hour, and Bimbler's bluff)
2 24 hour races (NJ --87 miles; Beast of Burden -75 miles)

when i look over this schedule, I def. see where I can take out some of the 50Ks and prioritize some races --in 2010 it seemed like i ran every race because it seemed like a good training idea at the time but never prioritized!!
So, in 2011, definately want to build more rest (all of fall -no ultras) into my schedule and target a few ultras where i am well rested and ready to go, and avoid burnout and injury-lolCTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-61566901186311617042010-08-11T17:50:00.001-07:002010-08-11T17:53:42.497-07:00Belated race report --VT 100 miler-July 17-18, 2010<img style="float:left; 2009-26:16), but since i didn't feel good the whole day (and night), I was proud of myself for digging deep and carrying on.
When I crossed the finish line last year, I said ' never again will I run VT'. It took so much out of me, but it was also a real journey...but i did forget the pain and entered again.
The course, not anywhere as difficult as the western Mountain 100s, is still tough. Mountains and relentless uphills to climb (ski areas like Suicide Six) at miles 21, 30, 39, 57, and 91..
.even the last 2 miles are uphill in the woods --with 1.3 to go, one has to climb the steepest .3 you can imagine!!
Plus, the weather is most likely the typical July heat and humidity. This year the temps were in the low 90s and humidity very high--113 runners (almost half the field) dropped out.
The hills are OK for me, but it's the focus and training that goes into the event --basically 50-70 miles every week for 4 months with tempo runs, hill runs, and typically an ultra (31 miles or more) every other weekend. Also to prepare I did 87 miles in a 24 hour race in May (training to go thru the night); and 60 miles in a 12 hour race (training for time on feet for 12 hours! arghh).
And as the time got closer, i did all my runs in the midday heat, and also did alot of night running (Waveny Park, etc).
So with all that work going into the 100, as horrible as I felt, was not going to quit. But the week of the race I was plagued with a stomach bug and excrutiating migraine headache
(and wanted to save the drugs for the race:) but had to take those Advils). The day before the race, my stomach hurt, and although i didn't feel weak I felt headachy, tired, and
somewhat out of it...and the night before I toss and turned and slept for maybe 10 minutes --wake up time was 2:30 for a 4 a.m. start!!!

I drove up by myself but also in the race were tons of friends, including Old Greenwich's John krazneiwicz, running his first 100 miler at age 59!!!, and my
friend Frank Colella, running his fourth VT --we must have had 30 ultra friends toeing the line. I started with Frank, and it was warm and humid already at 7 a.m. when we got to the first food aid station at 11.5 --I gulped down some pb and j's , drinks, chips, pretzels, and m and ms and we continued onward. Frank pulled ahead of me and I didn't see him
until we came into mile 21--the first big aid station that cars can park at --he was on the ground changing his clothes which were soaked thru. I did not feel well at all-my quads were way too beat up for this early in the race, and my stomach hurt!! i could not even keep up with Frank at an easy pace out of the station and once again lost him until mile 31, where
he and kraz were changing clothes --we all ventured up the big suicide six climb together, and kraz pulled ahead at another big hill at mile 39. It was slow going for
both Frank and I and he walked more than I wanted to but i stayed with him until we pulled into mile 47--Camp ten bear. We were an hour behind!!! Frank had a sausage sandwich and we walked
on with Nick, my pacer (he was volunteering and I would pick him up after a loop that took us back to that camp and mile 70)--we ran/walked over a section of river and single track,
and up some hills -it was here that we (along with another runner, mary) encountered 'the naked runner'--a man running buck naked, along with his clothed buddy -
his chafing was so bad that he had to take off and carry his clothes -lol...He told us not to look and we didn't...at mile 57 the sun was setting but it was still warm.
Frank couldn't really run anymore as his quads were in pain. So we lost some time walking the hills and didn't get back down to mile 70 til 10:30 p.m.!!!
Frank dropped out--he just didn't want to slog through 31 miles in 10-11 hours...as much as i felt the same way, my pacer and everyone else at the aid station told me to GO ON..
that is the way with ultras --put one foot in front of another..so my pacer Nick and i got some food and drink and went off into the woods. We were moving along
at a 15 minute pace, when i felt a twinge in my knee--and it was actually painful. I could not run for the next 5 miles, and after mile 81 i took some drugs and did some stretching and found that i could lift my knee so we ran from mile 81 to 88 --slowly; off and on...until the big aid station at Bill's garage...a beacon of lights in the night. many people were laid out in cots and had dropped.
i felt weird and unsteady on the scales and hoped that they didn't ask me to lie down!! On we went at at mile 92, Nick missed a turn into the woods...we went 1/2 mile down the road and I thought that i would cry when he said we had to go back..finally we were at mile 95.5, and we passed some people going up a huge hill. Already at 7 a.m. the sun was blazing down.
I was so happy to see the marker for the 1.3 miles to go --we were going to do it!! and finish. We crossed the line at 8:37 and sat in the hot sun with my friends who had finished before me.
Frank and his pacer Rob had spent the night on a cot and came to the finish, and John Kraz. came across the line in 29 hours --i was SO PROUD of him. He had a wonderful pace, joe reis, from westchester track club. Yes, says Kraz., he will do another 100 again but a 'flatter one'.CTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-35863016790135798972010-05-18T13:44:00.000-07:002010-05-18T15:32:59.171-07:00'3 days at the fair' 24 hour race --Sussex Fairgrounds, NJ -May 15-16, 2010<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiQuLb4LcHiBC-HtNKxh4qlNiTorbih5YvEe8dSdtMXKleYJrL3k8sRHtKgVJuZFZLMGFMTZ65s8fYqlTROR04XBi4h6WduS-bxiBSM-GqoVnMeuh4DJDThsrhMLTmdlrOeLdadTN8G-US/s400/3+days+at+the+fair+005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472728829177917506" />
finishing one more lap!
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5176CVphxECBN0kCDrqzGmK7eJ2dsqzCJ9957ZNTYVZf_-zmjnqLcgDOn7Rkh2mAmFsZQs64FfZqkkcFeG90EKcg9gdZaVlg2EQe01vLLPzoUOn-EZf8yutGPg7FL_R0S2frzGFo9txmf/s400/3+days+at+the+fair+008.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472728730901613666" />
taking a well-deserved rest
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 226px; height: 151px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq5tKsF4ai64A8tkLHmEZMRiX7n_CYibxphGJvigiJMv2BaA0FlhFN5y9y0YtrkdWBKCmheYhFfWkqZTk7zXX9Yc8YVfDxrNoD5UHFHMjEoyCdnx3-1beQfvoCaNoSRQu3DWysDdc6-rC2/s400/24+hour.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472728531509334578" />
taking a walking break...
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXJUsbEHzT7I075sen6wzf-TVIh4Q-vYd8YbZ6G3qO_ekyLsBf1b7QdOCgnFCl49soKLfVisIRj1iEj-SQXLscMxMu8HAVLdqGQGK6l1hh3aYmkMWPplLJH9nEeLLR2h8EDzs5zJhpzGFH/s400/3+days+at+the+fair+027.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472728378875188114" />
Siri and Byron -the mens' 24 hour winners
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7wuTNT3r1sjdsxSvP5Edb5qOAVx82Oo4O7SXkzB1-UN9vwX66ef5ZxhuNDp42swG45MrFXIx4gE690-6cvhhNILFvmGIZTiQR2nNcBAl2SCgrXOFhei9gkv-Xe_7IAGXYjYdmnyTDfhcK/s400/3+days+at+the+fair+023.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472728253576099154" />
the womens' winner Susan--her first 100 miles deserves roses!

The '3 days at the fair' 24 hour race was my third '24 hour' event, and while it was not my best in miles, it was definately the most fun. I had run Race Director Rick McNulty's Watchung Winter Ultra in 10 degree weather and wanted to try one of his warmer weather events..Frank and I wanted to run thru the night as training for VT 100 but we also wanted to run Greenbelt 50K, as trail training. But a 24 hour is what you make of it, and we had alot of friends entered--meredith, Fred, ray, Steve T., Shannon, Byron, etc. Another plus--the course was .86 mile loops and I have alot of experience dealing with the mental aspects of running loops from the B.U.S. events:-) So, Frank and I decided to enter ON TUES before the event-lol --we could carpool and put all of our stuff together -- and see what we could do for 'fun'--but a 24 hour event does take planning and commitment and if Frank was running he would make sure that I double-checked my packing list and that I didn't quit...the fatigue of Boston, Sybil 50K and Greenbelt 50K had left me with 'dead legs'--tried to rest last week but ended up going to Boston to visit my son and ended up walking 8 miles or so and spending hours on my feet --I have to say that walking alot during the week leading up to a 24 hour was a pretty stupid idea:( (the one thing bothering me during the race, besides my quads, were my feet).
The weather on Saturday was sunny and windy -pretty perfect except for the wind, which blew over our chairs-(. I left my house at 6:25; picked up Frank and all his stuff and we arrived at the Sussex County fairgrounds at 8:20.As we were driving in we saw the 48 hour runners out on the course!!! Right away i recognized Ray K., and Steve T. (who was stopping at 24)...we parked right on the course before the finish line/aid station and put out chairs, drinks (forgot water-hum..!)
and clothing/medical supplies...we walked over to the start/finish, where Rick, his family and kids and big Rottweiler had set up shop, and were camping for the duration of the weekend. Other tents dotted the landscape. Picked up our bibs which included a chip in the back; and were given a hat and water bottle (a hi-tek hand-held-yah!) --a 9 a.m. we were off. Right away, i felt pretty sluggish and tired --however, plenty of friends were on course and I decided to take it realllly easy and walk and talk with Fred, Ray and Meredith, just to get my legs going. Decided I might just got for 50 miles. I changed shoes and shirts after a few hours, and Frank, Siri, Susan and Byron went blowing by me every few laps -ugh...finally at about 50K (41 slowww laps), Marge A. showed up to pace/cook/volunteer --as much as I was not up to running (quads and feet hurt --all I could think of was 'good thing i didn't try and race the healthy kidney 10K-woulda been a disaster.. haha) , Marge wanted to run some slow loops --she had hoped to get in 20 miles but would stop when needed in the kitchen. This was just what the Dr. ordered, as I did want to stop. I was forced to run --and we did run 40 laps together, most with Frank,as he had cranked out 50 miles already and was 8 loops ahead of me and was slowing down due to stomach issues (my stomach hurt also --I was severely nauseous-- until i finally found a pepsid-ac in my drop bag). At about 9:30, after dark, we saw the most amazing fireworks, which lasted for 3 loops...(Rick said they were for a Sparta baseball game). Marge lasted til 3 a.m. with us (we got lapped by the 12 hour runners -they ran thru the night!!) and then had to go help prepare breakfast...thus started the 'witching hours' -3 to 5 a.m. where the road became desolate as most of the 48 hour runners were asleep. However, the roads were well lit, and I enjoy running thru the night and was beginning to feel better and found myself in 3rd place due to attrition (7 women started--2 ran 50 miles; one ran 100K and one got sick..)...so I plodded along and walked a lap with Meredith which was great. Poor Frank was dragging so could not run anymore, while i found i could run/walk, so tried to make up some time, even though the feet were really hurting (nothing like the 48 hour people though!!) -meanwhile my friend Susan was on her way to running 100 miles and marge went back out and paced her for a few miles:) Then it got light and I chuckled when went past Meredith's tent and her daughter Zoe was up, sitting on the grass and having a playdate!! Only 3 more hours to go!! At 7 a.m., Marge told me that the girl ahead of me was going to stop at 100 loops --I finished off my 100th with her, and wanted her to go on with me (we would tie for second and third) but her feet were gone...so I added one more loop and called it quits at 8:20 a.m. --could have run a few more laps but just didn't want to --too tempting to stop and finally put my feet up-ahhhh. Frank had finished 90 miles and was sitting anyway...and Fred was almost done. We watched, from our chairs, as the 48 hour runner Liz bauer ,who was setting a record of 205 miles!!, finished with Byron, Siri and the other frontrunner...amazing!!! And the mens' top 48 hour runners racked up laps until the bitter end --one also set a record? of 200 miles --truly inspirational!! also uplifting to see the kids run so many miles, 'effortlessly'..
After a change of clothes, coffee and a beer (wonderful), we hobbled back to the finish line where Rick awarded the top 3 in each race handmade pottery jars..i ended up getting second female for 101 laps,which was just short of 87 miles..
but what a great event this was, and def. want to go next year back more rested and in the mental zone so can run over 100!!! We had perfect weather, and saw so many friends and rick and his family did an awesome job to help each and every participant!! Rick's son ran 100 miles --now wish my son could do that!!!
Check out the great photos from the race!!!
and Frank's race reportCTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-57171376150689817112010-04-26T13:54:00.000-07:002010-04-27T06:54:39.771-07:00Sybil Ludington 50K /Boston marathon--April 19 & 24, 2010<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPeBrbRgL154p__u-tIg3m8AO93LuzEaQ3vAyEeHSgwFdmSHg7YZfqlb-0uVPldwlFE1EMKDVWBx2aflGXHKNvDt7Wrb5f6IiaGqtcIly1dWUFWhr-1HNKuMtiJqJYbJFDf5hpnM_afGGG/s400/sybil+50K.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464812760506407106" />
coming into the mile 29.5 Sybil aid station
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitAhvpo3loubmToErw8oWEWbH6UYW9JzEyXm1gnz5_Q-g36nT6CHHv84lJcwPyMSIkTM8bsi7Eov3WOOjVEBX1oweeFGkdn-wHRU7ezKm_94ZxdNbisIPsT8R5phL4CPf_DikoVwACIKHi/s400/sybil+50K+015.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464812308883606866" />
Ellen (who volunteered), Lucimar, Joe, Elaine and myself after finish
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDPt5I2OTRsg4TDNP5VejaApwvcGP6yNAP9xPwUo42Xe_anmHEV0RsHLf89BADCF3aA-gditQrwy2rTmAiB4qrfenQaoNK_MdVIg7Nv_neKoNJtdpltWc10ZsTpUxaVPVYvQN_qMoJCPTo/s400/sybil+50K+003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464811957307445106" />
Frank and Elaine sample the subs after finishing
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEVHbwoI8Ilx8drXxEzqUBqOOUdtLimv8oq4D57HuPHSeQaeZZngmtgFWz2nxKClcTe1KOA4tJ24tCgKrMtmBdwqQlYnUBL-iIGlwThmrezHmUKq-7dB4f6VXj0LcNGi6A39f4yiPNosby/s400/sybil+50K+009.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464811580437173506" />
Joe Handelman at finish with Joe LeMay (2 Princeton grads)
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4d1eRYl6xaS6da9lDKJpNlYM7AUUlxgmlSI9z5Be5FShnn5a6Vxozc1jcQ6evBQKmaTQzjLzFD0wKJbcVXWbXduJt4xwe1o0PcePa9vdz63h_Y_f6OxIX_rU4a8JGiYEpHMTmJ65-5Ggr/s400/boston+marathon+weekend+016.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464811045810954978" />
Frank, Hugo and I at finish of Boston Marathon

Always a time for firsts, and at age 51-almost 52- this was a first for me --the hilly Sybil 50K came on the heels of Boston Marathon (April 19 so 4 days prior) and 4 weeks after the Umstead 100 miler...I knew that I would finish, even if I had to walk, but also knew that Boston had taken alot out of me (as ran quite a bit after Umstead -weather too good and so happy to have the tapering behind me) and had no idea how I would feel. (I had done Boston/Sybil back-to-back in 2007 and felt much better in Sybil so hoped this was the case). I was thrilled that I finished Boston in an 8:42 pace (3:47) as my body was still fatigued from Umstead and the Scarsdale 15K!!! (week before, where I did push myself at a 7:15 pace). Boston is a tough roller coaster course and aside from the race, I had the best time!! so the weekend with running friends and with my son was more than worth leaving my Sybil race at the track...so took it really easy after Boston, with walking and swimming. I had a bad pinkie toe blister that killed me the entire Boston race, and was not healed! It was raw and sore --but taped it, wore different shoes and hoped for the best.
The morning of Sybil was a disaster --I forgot to put the plastic holder in my coffee maker and it leaked all over the kitchen-had to leave it as no time to clean (but later mopped and scoured the whole area)!!Then, tossed everything in car and as pulled out of driveway, realized my tire was flat (again)...arghh.. so quickly got the keys to other car, put my stuff in (forgot iPod) and left to meet Frank at the Bedford commuter parking lot --by now was 10 min late!! Fortunately, we were early to the start -haha --arriving just as a crew from the Brewster train station pulled in (Lucimar, Sal, and other city folks). The weather was just perfect --a touch chilly and windy but bright sun and not too hot. I was frazzled from the flat tire problem but managed to forget about and concentrate on the 31-plus miles ahead.
I carried a water bottle, and a fanny pack (which had bought at Umstead!)with some food and Advil/s-caps. We were driven to the start a mile away and I rode with Admas , who is coming back from a stress fracture and who hoped to finish and resume her Comrades training--I had told Frank to go ahead and get a ride to the start as I wasn't ready! We started a few minutes after 8 a.m., and Byron, the front running men and Frank took off up the hill _ I took it very easy, not paying attention to any of the other women --just holding back at an 11 min pace. I talked to Seth, who had run Umstead --his fiancee, Frances, had also run Umstead and was running Lake Waramug 50 the next day (and she had run Boston! but she's 20 years younger than I)...I soon left him and ran by myself along the busy route 6--soon we turned and went to the North of Lake Mahopac --hilly, but scenic --oh no--my quads were already tired by mile 4--it would be a long day!! I caught up with Michael, the race director of the Staten island ultra --we leap frogged each other until the half way point,where the eventual womens' leader passed me--I then started to feel better and to pick up the pace --it was just glorious outside, and I wanted to take photos of the road around the resovoir at mile 15 --but that road was short lived and soon I was on a long stretch of highway, where ran alone for an hour --finally I saw a person- Hiroshi, who was running in the relay. he told me that he was racing NJ marathon next weekend so didn't want to run the full 50K --the next stretch, after Cathy G.'s aid station at mile 19 and mile 21.7 and a wonderful aid station with a friendly woman and homemade cookies, was tough --rickety dirt roads and undulating terrain -here is where I saw Antonn, who told me that Joe Handelman was ahead --so I looked forward to catching him (he was running for his 80th b-day and started early)and to seeing Eliot at mile 29 --before that is the toughest hill of the course --a mile long hill at mile 24--endless!! at the top is an aid station..and then the marathon point is around the corner --I love this section of the course, because although hilly, when one comes out to the highway we only have 4 miles to go!! I started to click off the miles and forget the fatigue in my quads and hamstrings..I had caught up with Joe, given him a hug, and had my photo taken by Anton -'save some beer for me', said Joe, who added that he felt good save for a tight hamstring. Finally, I saw Eliot and the aid station --he told me we were at mile 29.5--horray!! After 10 or so min, a woman told me that we had 1.25 miles to go--what? But by then I knew the last mile --across the causeway, and down a hilly and busy thoroughfare into town. I felt good -at that point it's all mental.
After i finished (5:29--made up some time after the pitifully slow start), Frank took some photos and we talked with ellen and joe leMay, Tom and Frank D...then it was into the lodge where we got birthday cake and food --I was so pleased to get a nice handmade plaque for first master female and to see Frank get second 40s (Byron was in the top 3 overall)...what a great day!!! I really love this race, and I never attempted it until 2006, when Frank suggested that he run it as his first Ultra -it is now one of my favorites and the one great thing about this low-key event, as opposed to Boston, is that I can slow down and walk whenever I want; or push myself--absolutely no time pressure..that's the nice thing about 50Ks -and this race is a Taconic rrc event! I could not muster the energy to drive up to lake Waramug the next day to run the 50K or pace in the rain...but many friends did run and finished their first 50 miler and ran the 50K/100K -congrats to all!! Can't wait to run both next year!CTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-70026859016341274142010-03-30T15:46:00.000-07:002010-04-02T14:25:19.177-07:00Umstead 100 mile Endurance run --March 27-28, 2010<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis9XIdO3f1rokzBqVTfvxoAvp-ALzeHzs2aQAHgYzuX4XNZyNW2tXGcQPM-7vQGoYltf2oxsNSfj4-M14K8ZirJpvH5y-HmHx5cc6HHGbBveN2qr1PjFIUyfrYMKtNHpI2Xddfx5yNb0-A/s400/umstead+2010+005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454576681622209810" />
done!!!
I am finally updating my blog:). The long road to Umstead 100 and the long winter is finally over. In short, I set a new P.R. in this year's edition of Umstead with 22:08 -hard believe would still be setting at P.R. at age 51!! So many stories from this weekend, I hardly know where to begin. For starters, Frank paced me the last 2 1/2 loops and finished in 22:08 also!!! He ran an amazing 9:11 for the first 50 miles and then backed off which allowed me to catch up with him--his goals were to finish and to come in under 24, and he more than surpassed those! Tony ran a P.R. of 19:34, and friend Eric finished his first 100! So many friends were also out on the trail -ira, kim, fred, joe L., tammy, steve t., shannon, meredith, Hugo, jenny c.,and the NJ contingent (johnny, laura, susan and marge). We were lucky that Rick and Johnny were around for support most of the day until they paced. and Wayne came down to pace Marge! This is a rolling dirt-road course with 12.5 mile loops -2 aid stations per loop with awesome volunteers to help get the runners food and drink. The weather was chilly but dry with a full moon--really lucky, considering we had rain friday and monday--heavy at times, also!
Background ---with Umstead as my primary goal, and the Boston Build up series as my secondary goal, and NYRRC 1/2 marathons, I put in an average of 60-70 miles a week plus tempo runs or long runs (Watchung, run around manhattan, albany,florida 6-hour run, caumsett).
I felt ready, but hamstrings had been tight and foot was still alittle off after long runs --was never sure that my training was enough but my only goal was to run/walk productively and finish under 24 hours. On Thursday before the race, I barely slept-I fell asleep a 3:30 a.m. and woke up at 5:30 a.m. to meet Tony to drive to plane flight....what an awful way to start the day!! Despite the 2 hours sleep, I had a good day!! Tony and I got to JFK and met ira, karen, steve T., and his wife alex and son joey. We had an easy flight, rented a car, and met Rick, Tony's pacer.
We checked into our hotel, Homewood suites, across the street from a fun mall. We all went for lunch, then over to Umstead park for registration. Then we hung around (in the rain) for the pre-race briefing, where I saw Frank and all of the above!!
We then went to wal mart for supplies and a subway sandwich and went back to hotel -I was exhausted and the race hadn't even begun!!!
After a 4 a.m. wake up call (fortunately, I was asleep at 9:30, after preparing my bags--ended up forgetting hat and sunglasses!!!:( lol), met Rick and Tony in the lobby. We had a bit of a mix up in that Tony forgot his energy drink and had to go back to the room! We then got to the park around 5:15 and went into the cabin to get organized and have some breakfast. It was chilly and I needed a headlamp.
At 6 a.m. we all assembled and were off --I was sooooo nervous. The long road was about to begin....we went out and back on the airport spur and I will never forget seeing all the headlamps coming back!!! I then ran with Frank til mile 7 and he took off. I settled into a groove with ira and Eric. After the second loop, my hamstrings were alittle painful and i thought my race would be over. Plus, I had a painful blister on my pinkie toe --after the third loop, I asked Rick to pop the blister and treat it --he did, thankfully, but it felt so raw and painful I did not think i could continue...but it went numb and my stride returned to normal. Thank God!!! I learned a lesson about blisters and shoes. I ran with Eric off and on (he passed me) and finished the 50 miles in 9:58!! This uplifted my mood as this was my fastest 100 mile 50 mile split. When I was coming back out (after having birthday cake at the aid station), I saw Frank and he said that he was walking some of the next loop and that he would 'take it easy' so that I would catch up with him. I could not bear the thought of us running the same pace for 50 miles, each alone, with him 1/2 hour ahead!!! So, I sped up and hammer the next lap in 2:37!! I saw him coming in and he said he would walk and I could catch up. We ad 3 loops to go...so again, I worked as hard as I could to catch up and no Frank--finally at mile 4 of the loop I saw him walking up the big hill. All of this made my race, as
I worked harder to catch up with him than I would if just plodding along. We then finished the loop in 2:40!!! for me. The next loop was long, eve though we ran alot of it. we stopped to get Frank and expresso gel as he was falling asleep standing up., and then we stopped to get me gloves and root thru the bags for tights (we had a discussion about putting on tights and finally decided not to!!). I was getting mentally and physically tired. At mile 88 and at the headquarters, we saw Hugo and again this was so uplifting --only 12.5 miles to go!! We had been on our feet for 19 hours...and this last loop was the hardest part. We started off and decided to run as much as we could --we still walked all the hills but did run the downhills, as much as they were painful on my quads. Frank was really strong and pulled ahead and kept asking if I was back there!! It pushed me to keep up. Finally, we were at aid station mile 7 (95 miles --5 to go)!! We had gotton thru the dark, dreary section, and now had the hilly sawtooth and the main road to headquarters turn. We clicked off mile 96, 97 and 98 --we then walked up the big hill and I said to Frank, let's tryand run this and I can break my time of 22:18 --so we ran the entire last 1.5 miles. Frank had a strong flashlight for the rocky, dark, last .5 mile --he led the way and we crossed the finish line at 22:08. I was so elated that he finished his first Umstead!! They gave him a choice of pendant or belt buckle and he chose a pendant for his daughter --great!!! Anthony, rick and steve were at the finish to greet us. They wanted to catch a 5 a.m. gate opening so we went with them after socializing a bit and taking some photos with Hugo. I was cold, wet, and ready to go inside. Frank's wife came to pick him up in the hotel lobby (early for her)...and then i checked into my room and went for a hot shower and nap...painful blisters!!
I couldn't sleep so got up and we went over to the park to see Meredith finish!!!
We also saw Tammy (she set a PR) and the NJ guys and Wayne. fun day!!! finally took a nap, went mall walking, and out for easy dinner and flew back yesterday. What a great weekend and what memories, and what fun to meet new friends.CTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-6562902641462570562010-02-24T10:58:00.000-08:002010-02-24T11:14:01.844-08:00Albany winter marathon --running against the wind! We both had to go to the bathroom so used the portajohns after we ran back to the start line...
It was an experience starting in the back of the pack, but since this was a training marathon and since I wanted to run the race at a 9 min pace, this was fine. n fact, it took all the pressure off of running a certain time. I had run 10.5 miles the day before, so was a touch tired plus had run 50 miles in Florida ...I caught up with Barbara and was happy to see her --Frank and I ran together until the first mile and then he took off -as soon as we made the turn into the inner campus loop, wham! We were hit by huge wind gusts and a strong headwind --boy was I happy to have hat and gloves, but could have used a headband...I found myself walking to take a breather even at mile 5, which was into the wind. I felt zapped. At mile 10, i regained some energy, and ran in a pack of people and turned my iPod on (which thankfully had remembered). I saw Eliot at every turnaround, somewhat ahead of me.
At mile 15 I prayed that the next 11 miles would go quickly. It was not until mile 21 that I began to pick up the pace so to get the race overwith --it seemed like each turn was windier--especially the last mile of the loop -wow!! I saw Frank finishing when i was on the inner loop --only 20 more minutes...finally it was over.
A hot shower, some soap, coffee, and then a trip to the brewery made us feel human again!!! all and all it is a good event (the volunteers are awesome)but the weather is unpredictable. It is Albany, NY in the winter!!! and good training..CTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-64209680745046609222010-02-09T14:56:00.000-08:002010-02-10T16:44:42.597-08:00Boy scout 100th aniversary night -Feb. 8, 2010<img style="float:left; Dave has organized and run this for 11 years!!! He is also known for finishing 33 nycms --he has the longest streak. This was a fun run, with coffee and donut and bagel stops along the way. Since I was planning to do a long run, and no race was scheduled, I was intrigued!! Yes, it was going to be cold, but i figured that if Frank came we would be in it together. We could do as much or as little as we wanted. Eliot read about it and jumped on the bandwagon! He would meet us at Dave's apt on west 97 street on Sunday a.m. before the 8 a.m. start! Eliot has just started running ultras, and grew up in China Town so was also intrigued --Frank relunctantly said he'd run but may end up as an ice cube:( (temp--high of 29 degrees).
We drove to the West side uneventfully and found a cheap ($18) parking garage, and met the group at dave's apt. on West end ave and 97th street. I did not let myself think of the long journey ahead --I just kept telling myself it was another long run.
We had a group of Korean road runners with us --one of them,Yijoo Kwon, is running across the U.S.-he made a short speech, and then Dave made a speech about Ted Corbitt and about his running route around manhattan, and we paid a small tribute to Ted, went outside and took some photos and were off about 8:15. We proceeded slowly (10 min pace) up the Westside highway and under the GW bridge and across northern manhattan to Dykman street --it was cold but the sun was shining and I had never run in this area before, so it was cool to be led by Grant and Phil, who liveand run in that area. We were accompanied by Dave's friend Alex, an engineer, on a scooter. He carried water and hot beverages, and generally cheered us on, and told us the mileage if we asked...he was an awesome addition to the run, as he also knew the route!!!
I ran with Ruth, Eliot, Bob Falk, Mike Tobin, and some of the other B.U.S. runners.
After about 7.7 miles, we stopped at Twin Donuts on the upper (186 street) East side.
After the group went to the bathroom, got drinks, donuts coffee...we set out again.
We went all the way down the east side to the nycm route and Marcus garvey park, and cut across to the East side at 90th street - at about mile 17 we stopped at Bob's bagels for about 20 minutes. I got a coke, a whole grain bagel and had some of Eliot's choc. chip cookies --I also had some expresso from Alex!!! The stops were welcome, even though it was tough to get going again after a cozy coffee shop and bagel store..we then went over to the East side drive and ran all the way down. Grant had left us, and Frank, Alijca, Phil and some of the Korean runners were well up ahead. Eliot and I ran together most of the time, even thankfully taking walking breaks (my feet were taking a pounding with the concrete)--he took some photos of us in front of the Brooklyn bridge, and then we jogged to the Staten island ferry terminal,where we went upstairs (24 miles!!!) and met the front running group (being entertained by a clown-haha). Frank said 'where have you been? we've been here for 15 minutes'!! But i reminded him that it was NOT race:) --we then waited for Dave (who had helped Joe in a fall) and then Alex fed us some wonderful hot tea!!!
The whole group then made our way outside the ferry terminal and went up the West side highway, past the Intrepid museum and chelsea brewing --Phil, eliot and I ran most of the way back together, and the last 3 miles went quickly even though I was hurting...(stiff)--we exited off the West side highway into beautiful Riverside park and back to dave's. Frank and a Korean runner, followed by Aljica, were the first to finish. Eliot finished with Phil and I, in fine shape!! His third ultra in 2 months.. We then went up to dave's and changed and had cookies and rootbeer and met his wife...what a great day I had!! This is something I never would do alone.
Even Frank was happy that I dragged him along --our second ultra in January, and this puts me over 210 miles for the month...CTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-88477127958397798902010-01-12T10:03:00.000-08:002010-01-12T10:23:13.931-08:00watchung winter ultras --Jan 9, 2010<img style="float:left; Since the course was 3 loops of the 10.7 mile (or more, according to Garmins) sierra trail, in Watchung reservation, the 50K was about 32.1 miles. plus, i got lost a few times so figure I ran @33 miles. The worst part about the day was
that it was about 20 degrees and the race started at 8 a.m. -brrr!! I finished the first loop wearing 3 layers of everything, and behind me was Rob with alomst frostbitten hands; plus his hips was hurting so he dropped at about 11 miles. I was somewhat surprised that he was packing it in after one loop, but it was icy, snowy, hilly (3 parts -one paved hill) and slow going... I didn't want to go on eiter but figured I's finish the second loop and see where Frank was. Rob was Ok with taking nap in car and reading his book. The next loop took me about 2:15 --I ran it with Coln, a friend of my NJ friend Joe --they were both in the 50K as are training for Comrades and other spring ultras. I also ran some with Yuki, who I met in VT --he is running Massanutten!! Thankfully 2 water stations were on course as even though it was cold we were working hardand were thirsty!! After the first loop I had grabbed my handheld. I got back to the parking lot in 4:30 and Frank had gone on -Rob was still in the car. I figured I'd push on and do the marathon (a cutoff was on the big loop)-however, a guy with a garmin pointed out that the marathon distance was really close to 28.2 miles, so I might as well go the distance!! and get credit for the 50K.
I started out the next loop with my friend Mary, and we walked alot of the icy patches --somehow I got 10 minutes behind schedule. I tried to push it and did get lost going up a hilly area by myself. After I passed the marathon cutoff, I passed over 6 runners!! It was such a great feeling to go up the final hill and see the aid station in the parking lot -- and the best thing --Johnny walker black label shots were waiting. Frank was in the car shivering so we took a few photos, talked to my friend Joe, and headed for home!!!CTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-19728879341763309332009-12-16T12:40:00.000-08:002009-12-16T13:18:47.749-08:00Roxbury Marathon and taconic relays -12/12 and 12/13<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF5Cb7a7EuOvdQNP-wQWecrDllNnjf-2ial-sByx6HqZX83zb0-x56rELGMD0ozsYCryZ7bdT12qvaYXvKKJrWRi1jtCE2R_M3s_tYztf1wU3c-CWiy50B-9o12CUw6xKoCuu7559Lhley/s400/roxbury+marathon+011.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415945309644055282" />
lots of snow on the ground!!!
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdnSL7fyC3i1x2Qeivvrjl7qrYeffkM9w1K4ltYnVnuoVzW_9_wAB6WzEshqooG_-mHV7OLfEGSsF1XXkk2JRlaGPKvntODq43D1eXosPUi9E9hXIyMlmOrA-G6jgQfYkzXxlmyJHLdBjK/s400/roxbury+marathon+010.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415942242011310226" />
The course went through the town of Roxbury
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrNdYKzZX1t7YoBOeUt94TGJ6_DFsWEk1GabFmJP55e67RzPQ9C3Yf4qnMfXObcS4mDP9DEU936dcTdeza-PG4j-Gjt-G5SGHRteoy8q_LxfwITYF71OPv5kabCeylWHE_E6i0L2WwXVyT/s400/roxbury+marathon+002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415941998400318482" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9z-O3jB0ldM-9Z3wZI9hwVvoaS94Z6p-15GWIZ8wuVsEbpK4Lww3zB0XQRLPbvFRhqNYq97jpZg1PyMf9z-LFJAR0vNFou6KlSn51MHzOO4sG6Gesda_RvvvzqktDTJKd5zPCNzd0trU0/s400/roxbury+marathon+004.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415941707352512290" />
I had never done the free Sat.a.m. Roxbury road race series as the town is north of Danbury and just too far to drive for a training run, however scenic and low-cost (this I reserve for Westport and Norwalk!). The Roxbury marathon is the culmination of the year-long series, and my friend Rob has done the marathon several times and raved about the event --tough workout,well organized, $5 cost,2aid stations anda hilly 3.5 mile loop,plus a big dirt road (up and down a big climb) to start. So, I figured that running the marathon was worth the drive -plus, I have never run that far in Dec.!
Big problem -- the weather wassupposed to be 18degrees at the start with a wind chill of 10 --lovely...
Frank, Rob and I planned to meet our other friend Eliot at the start. Frank became very sick with a nasty cold and had to stay home, and Rob decided he'd do the accompanying 1/2 marathon as he had to be somewhere by 1 p.m. soooo I left my house at 7:15 for an 8:30 start, thinking it was about an hour -well, got to start with 5 minutes to spare.
Runners were lining up at the start --1/3 of a mile down the road!!! I barely had to time to ign n, get my gloves and hat on, and go to the bathroom. It was bitter cold but the sun was shining. The race had about 100 people line up..and 57 of them ended up finishing the marathon. The rest did the 1/2or even more (Eliot ran 16 miles as had to leave). I used the first 8 mile out and back as a warm up.I was way in the back, and planned to stay at a 10 minute pace for awhile --the course was just beautiful --picture perfect new england and at 8 miles, we went by my car --I shed some layers and out on warmer gloves as hands were completely numb. The volunteers were great --breaking the water cups which had frozen,and even offering runners beer!
I had brought food and put it on top of my car. By the second loop most of the runners had finished the 1/2 and I saw Rob as he was leaving -again, I stopped at my car to change layers. I plodded on on the next loop --we had to run 5 more for the marathon. I got lapped by faster runners,but this was actually good as I liked seeing them go by. I ended up finishing in 4:13 and was happy with this effort considering I finished the last loop in sub 9 min miles. I finished with a woman from Illinois (used to the cold) who was running her 50 states marathons. Bruce Golart finished right behind me. After getting some post race food, I changed and jumed into my warm car....brrrr --I was never so happy to be inside. I missed talking to Rob and Eliot, and I missed Frank and wished he cold have run such a nice course-
however, 3:45outside in 20 degree weather would've done him in:(
next post -Taconic relays..CTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-66496475230631661292009-11-22T15:10:00.000-08:002009-11-22T15:47:22.109-08:00Knickerbocker 60K --11/21/09<img style="float:left; Frank and I drove in and met Rob, who took the train.
When we were getting our bibs we saw Ritchie, Barbara ? from Millrose, Siri, and other B.U.S. people like Nick and Frank D. Plus, lots of other friends. I was still chatting at the back of the pack when the gun went off. We had to run a 2 mile out and back, and I went very slowly (well, a 9 min pace)--Eliot was right behind me. Then we went thru the finish line where they had set up a timing area and station and where cheering crowds were waiting...we then had to run 9 loops of the hilly 4 mile middle central park section. I settled into a 9:00 pace, with a guy from NJ named Johnny and Eric and Lynn. Frank and Rob too off like a shot, never to be seen or the rest of the race except when Frank lapped me as he was finishing.
Wayne kept saying 'we are going way too fast' and he dropped back and Johnny and I pretty much leap-frogged each other for most of the loops, or I ran alone. The volunteers were great, because this is a funny race --since it is loops, you do feel at times that you are all alone...Phil at a certain point, and the other leaders, lapped me...it was just a gorgeous day and I tried to concentrate on keeping a steady pace and on a normal footfall for my left foot --and I did get a blister!! The last couple loops were the best as I knew I would finish,and that my foot would hold up in the Mizuno trail shoes --Frank did catch up to me and Johnny as we were finishing the 8th lap, and seeing him finish and knowing Rob was ahead of me made me want to push the pace...I did, but still couldn't break 6 hours (finished in 6:01:30?) --still,
this was only 7 min off my time from 3 years ago. And as I was older, out of ultra shape, and cautious was pleased just to finish...afterward, Phil (who won), Rob, Frank and I went to have beer and burgers --then as an added treat we took Phil home to Inwood Park -got to talk to him and see the night views of the Hudson river!
See Frank's blog for report and photos!!CTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-23361900026632250572009-11-10T05:33:00.001-08:002009-11-10T05:35:49.775-08:00DAHLIA WATERCOLORS --fall dahlia colors<img style="float:left; But since it was my 20th NYC marathon, I was happy that I was at least able to finish, and that all my friends finished well...I took the bus in from white plains high school, and went into Fort Wadsworth late as or bus got stuck in traffic. I walked in with Frank, and we immediately went to the dunkin donuts booth where we got coffee and a hat! Then we bumped into Alicia and Nick in the achilles area --that was fun!! I then left Frank and went int the local elite coral where I saw susan warren,beth moras, and the taconic runners!! I also saw Yuki putting on her costume. We were led onto the bridge @9:20 and I have to say, some of the men we lined up with did smell, and it was nerve wracking as they were all so fast, and I feared getting trampled -haha!!! ugh--the start used to be all women in one area --no peeing on the bridge this time, ither, with the men around!!! At 9:42 we were off -perfect running weather -- I was so tentative to start because my foot had been a bit sore just walking around trick or treating-lol...but it felt OK!! I had a toe pad in the front of the left foot which after mile 10 started to kill me but clicked off steady 8 min miles with the goal of just finishing in under 4 hours ---suddenly, at mile 5? Frank came up with Shannon M. and I was SO happy to see them!!! I then ran with Shannon for awhile until she took off, and then I saw Frank go in a port-o-john, and I waited for him to catch up but he didn't and finished right behind me. Right on the bridge, I looked down and saw a 20 dollar bill in a puddle--I stopped and picked it up and stuck it in my shorts to buy post race beer and coffee later!! Appropriate bill, as it was my 20th NYCM...and I had just lost a $20 the other day --weird.
The Queensboro bridge was slow going but I looked forward to seeing the Taconic people and to the crowds on first --missed the taconics, so my next target was to find Rob at 116th street --the concrete was pretty jarring but the crowds were amazing.
Hard to believe that in 1982 at the age of 24 I pounded these same streets in my first marathon!! which then was the third weekend in Oct. and 'only' had 10,000 people...so it did mean alot to me to finish this one and although my feet hurt I was not in pain!! Anyway, i did see Rob and handed him a hat that I had stuck in my shorts for him! Then mile 20 over the bridge was clogged with people and I lost a full minute!!! 2:41 was my 20 mile split...I then worked to keep up the 8 min pace which was not easy with the wet roads and crowds and that hill at mile 22 I think I had a 9 min mile) --last 2 miles were 8 minutes, and as I went down 59th street tried to appreciate the crowds but my quads were in pain and I just wanted it to b over -finally, the finish!! and who should I see but Luis. we then waited for Frank, who
finished a few minutes later (apparently he made it on TV)...we then began the long walk to baggage and hooked up with Rob. It was not a 100 or 50 miler, but felt like an ultra to me all the same!! Can't wait for next year, I think! Oh, we got a nice 40th anniversary medal....see Frank's blog for report and more photosCTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-85526177469907969652009-10-27T17:15:00.000-07:002009-10-27T17:42:12.214-07:002009 NYC marathon...my 20th!!<img style="float:left;

In the meantime, I had a tough time in Maine --the top of my foot started hurting again; plus had a nasty cold that left me dead tired --simply could not get my body moving. I changed over to the half marathon in the middle of the race, and even with cranking up the pace ran 1:42:45 (7:50s) --then ran/walked 7 more and saw Frank finish--yeah!!!!!!!!! in 3:25...had I hung back, probably would have finished the marathon, AND would have probably placed as the first 50s was 3:52 --my age group in the half was enormously competitive -came in 6th place -haha!!! I learned my lesson big time about committing to and focusing on a race and a goal....otherwise one is left wit an unsatisfying experience. In this case, i really did not feel well (it was a struggle to breathe), my Nike shoes were hurting...it just seemed that my mind was not into it and was happy just to finish the half, and had a great weekend!!!CTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-86628122917615605272009-10-02T13:10:00.000-07:002009-10-02T13:40:34.496-07:00October already??? I have been a good patient during the week, biking 2-3 times, running easy on pavement and resting --can finally slap the foot down right on my arch and it's fine--the last few miles of the rainy marathon tune-up it was sore, though.
In doing the tune-up I gave up racing tomm a.m. in Grete's half but the tuneup was more relaxed ...I feel very close to getting healed but may have to do total rest next week!!! In any case, have made it thru 3 long runs and now this weekend am headed up to Maine and am looking forward to the foliage, and the sights --will probably do the 1/2 marathon --John running in relay, and Frank will run the full. John wanted us to come up and the timing was right for Frank to run a marathon, and although I want to run the full as well, the timing may not work for me (need shorter race this weekend, unless it is a long hike on trails:)) Next week, have 2 painting projects to work on -fall is really here!! Lots of events to look forward to --maybe Staten Island 1/2, a trail run on the 17th or 18th and some shorter races til NYCM!!
Then Stone Cat 50 --since my injury better be gone by then and foot strong, will do Stone cat easy..like last year if it works.
For now, off to Maine marathon/half marathon/relay tomm -yeah!! Oh, in 2006, I finished the marathon in pain (hip tendonitis) --I think my time was 3:37?? and I came in second 45-49...I loved the course --it was scenic and fast. After the race, since I had Hank and Ike with me (John had watched them after his relay portion), we
went into Portland to three dollar dewey's for hamburgers and I snuck into the Portland Museum and LL Bean.CTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-16108017300036806342009-08-31T11:39:00.000-07:002009-08-31T14:33:16.039-07:00August update -family trip to Normandy<img style="float:left; The travel over is stressful, but it was great when in this idyllic spot; a huge house with 10 bedrooms, a guest cottage, and miles of forest trails, water views of siene and friendly people --best of al, motorists are so used to bikers that they gave me a wide berth while running and biking so it's much safer than in the U.S....
and although we had a good time with all the cousins (20 people were staying at my mother-in-law's house), we did not do as much touring as i would've liked -no Paris and no Normandy beaches. But the weather in 'Haute Normandie' was amazing --every day low humidity, sunshine and in high 60s (actually, like today, as i write this!)....each day, a group would go running 3-4 miles in the morning, but since i was jet lagged i would sleep trough this 9 a.m. jog -my son, andrew, however, went every day with the group. Then i would be left to my own devices, and would usually run for an hour and a half in trails (but lots of small rocks so a couple times re-injured my foot by stepping hard on a rock)...I had the desire to do a 20 mile run or a 5 hour hike but it didn't work out..then we'd go to a beach or go to a market in a neighboring town, or i'd bike. Then, as everyone loves to shop for food and cook, we'd have huge dinners outside-late at night too, so definately gained weight --don't weigh myself but can feel it around my middle!! So back to square one --extra pounds and injury --arghhh!! Did get lots of painting photos and ideas!!!Rain forecasted for Sat., but wanted to run the Westport 9.3 miler as did take 2 rest days before came home. So, I did despite pouring rain driving up.
Felt endurance completely gone, and foot had swelled up on plane...and even a 7:30 pace was a struggle-out of shape!. But I made it, and actually felt better the next day at the NYRRC x-country race --if we could run in VCP all the time i'd be so happy...wonderful trails! but we have waveny..amazing, I can run barefoot or in racing flats on grass with no pain at all.
Have been working on strengthening foot also..
In any case, I just found my training diary from France so though i'd type it in -
8/19 --arrived; Got a fairly strong digital x-ray which showed no sign of stress fracture but inflamed ligaments and tendons. I ran only 3 times this week --tues. p.m. at waveny, fri. and sat. I 'tested' the foot out this Sat at the Club Team Championships -ouch!! For the first 2 miles it was Ok, but then I felt sharp pain on top of foot --not good..was able to crank out a faster last mile (6:45 -downhill) and breathing was labored but actually good for my lack of racing...so cross training and rest is the option for the week --fortunately have no races coming up (until New Haven 20K or 5K, Norwalk 1/2 and Maine marathon oct. 1, but can be in shape to jog that or even do the 1/2)--if it works will run the Westport aug 29 race. I can run but afterward foot is stiff and tender --not fun.
But when I think f the pounding i put my body through this winter to get read for Umstead and with general racing, and with the Memorial weekend trek, and with VT 100 miler-that's alot...I am just a bad patient and don't want to rest.
At first, it seemed funny that all of our friends are starting to put i long runs to gear up for fall marathons while I was recovering from VT (actually wasn't tired after 2 weeks)but now I am realizing that Oct. 4 and the Maine marathon is really close to 7 weeks away...but for now minimal mileage and get healthy again.CTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-20786811957977503162009-07-22T14:16:00.000-07:002009-07-22T15:26:15.887-07:00more thoughts on VT 100/race reportFor the week leading up to VT, I wasn't even sure that I would make it past 20 miles,
as my foot had been hurting --I believe that I bruised it in the New canaan mile (beware when doing something different) and then went on to NOT listen to my body by running a high mileage week-90 miles
leading up to July 5...then I was careful,but during the Norwalk summer series 7 miler, it was
just hurting with ever step...so last week -ice, rest, and drugs (went to see Dr.)I did cheat
and walk/run 5 miles on wed a.m. and swam a mile on thursday. On Friday, fellow Greenwich resident and VT 100 entrant Hugo picked me up and off we went to Silver Hill meadow--so much fun riding up with him, as I got
to hear about western states crewing),Miwok, and Boston..and got to read my book.
We made a couple of stops and got to registration @3:30--frm then on it was a social time, catching up with friends- imagine my surprise when i saw Yuki Nishide, ready to run her first 100 (she is Frank's and my friend and
an awesome runner, so know she would do well). And the biggest surprise of all -Nick wanted to pace me! Nik is experienced as they get, and he would be volunteering at camp 10 bear during the day, an so wold be ready whenever i was. So we hooked up my current pacer Hannah with Bob G., who sadly dropped out with stomach and foot issues (but he was Ok with that!).. We put our drop backs out, got weighed and got our blood pressure taken, and then stood in line for dinner which went past the dessert line so ended up eating dessert first).
Sat with Lydia, Bob and Admas... Hugo drove me back to the lovely Yankee village motel
where I attempted to sleep -plus, it was raining all night, an there was a party next door so didn't sleep that well..maybe 3 hours? The runners next door agreed to knock on my door at 2:30 to make sure i was awake and hugo picked me up at 3 (he stayed down the street)--the starting area was very dark, and I found Frank at the start
looking very flustered --he had made a wrong turn and gotton lost. Then, I left my flashlight in the grass
while taking a last minute bathroom stop!! Fortunately, a guy next to me lent me a flashlight (number 17-thank you) or I truly would have been in the dark..I ran the first 15 or so humid miles (it had stopped raining) with Frank and Yuki and Yuki --my foot was a discomfort with every step! I am not a morning person so it was had to get in the one on 3 hours sleep in the humidity...but the horse started to come by and that was fun -plus we had some nice scenery and a new muddy trail,which woke me up Finally mile 21, where we saw lots of our friends
and I did some stretching and ate while Frank changed his clothes. Then the fun began-we hit a major climb up a meadow and then had to run back down the other side...plus a few steep climbs. Afer mile 30 aid station where I llled around for 10 minutes too much, Frank and I set off to climb Suicide Six --I had forgotton how tough this was!!and we still had 3 more hours until the second half!!! We got to mile 47, camp ten bear, at 2:35 --25 minutes earlier than last year!! But by the time Frank talked with his wife and daughter and by the time I dealt with Hugo's cooler to put a sandwich in, it was 3 p.m. -- by now I had taken at least 4 advils, 4 succeed caps and 2 pepsid acs, tons of food and tons of drink --so the foot was feeling better and i felt OK...
the next section was called 'agony hill' and it kept going up and up through mud and rocks --this was a new section of the course! Finally we got to Tracer Brook, mile 57, and the start of more climbs! lol--3 miles of climbs.We caught up to Yuki and I told her what was ahead --but it was fun climbing as we all talked together.
Frank and I ran the downhills to Margaritaville (2 miles worth) and then pretty much ran/walked to the Grateful dead station at mile 65, and to camp 10 bear. From miles 62-70 is hands down my favorite part of the course, as
the terrain is runnable and it is exciting as it gets dark to come back and pick up our pacers --and then the best news -'only' 30 miles to go!! Frank ran ahead down the last hill to Camp ten bear and I walked to save my quads --I sat down with my bag and cleaned my feet (which were filled with debris), changed my shoes, went to bathroom and all that stuff, and off we went...Nick and Rob ere waiting for s and it was such a good feeling to know hat Frank would have Rob to stay with him and me Nick. But we hoped to finish together. I know how Frank get second winds, and so wasn't too worried when he complained to Rob that he was really tired...when we got to mile 77, Zeke got him some soup and some coffee, and i had some soup and off we all went into the dark meadow.
Miles 77-88 are tough -they call it the witching hour -but I really like the peacefulness of the night and don't have sleep issues..I do take a ton of caffiene! Gels, coke, coffee, and chocolate...the night was spectacular!! Nick an I stayed behind or went ahead Frank and Rob until we climbed (with another pacer whose runner had dropped) a big hill before Bill's at mile 88, where we got weighed(124 --omg) and met Trail Pixie!! and saw Joe L., who had had stomach problems and had to rest.
Finally, the last 12 miles which seemed like an eternity --and mile 90 is a huge, huge hill, then tough single track...Nick kept saying 'they TRY to make it hard -this is trail run'. It is hard to describe how happy I was to see Polly's aid station at mile 95 -ONLY 5 miles to go!! Frank got something to eat and we all jogged down the hill and along some nice road stretches...Frank took off!!He was running in pain but running fast!
I had hoped he would wait for me to cross the finish line but it didn't seem like it. I did my best to keep running and was overjoyed to see him and Rob walking. Nick and I caught up to them and we all stayed together through the finish line in 26:16!! We both said Never again!! But this was the first 100 we have done together...After some photos, I collapsed with painful quads..it was all I could do to shuffle over to get my bag. I saw Hugo in the medical tent, as he had dropped out at midnight, but was cool with that.
Nick drove me to his hotel where I had a hot shower and a nap --well deserved!! Never again --well, maybe!CTmarathonerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08923706540519033432noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7797911913883421463.post-73171203215208727712009-07-21T07:52:00.001-07:002009-07-21T08:00:22.867-07:00scenes from the VT 100<img style="float:left;
